American architect whose buildings are almost all characterised by their white colour, austere geometric forms and light-filled interiors | 1934 born in New Jersey / USA | 1957 graduates in architecture at “Cornell University”, Ithaca | 1963 opens office in New Jersey – is oriented towards LE CORBUSIER – having previously worked for Marcel BREUER, among others | 1972 co-founder of the architecture group “New York Five”, together with Michael GRAVES, Charles GWATHMEY, John HEJDUK and Peter EISENMAN | 1983 honorary member of “Association of German Architects” | 1984 receives Pritzker Architecture Prize | 1997 honoured by Praemium Imperiale from Japan’s imperial family | 2021 he is retiring
