British architect who accepted an invitation to Japan in 1877, where he taught Western-style architecture and created over fifty Western-style buildings | 1852 born in London / England | 1869 studies architecture at “South Kensington School of Art and the University of London” | 1873-75 works for Gothic Revival architect William Burges | 1875 leaves Burgess’s office to study stained glass with Horatio Walter Lonsdale | 1876 wins “Soane Medal” for his ‘Design of a Country House’ | 1877 arrives in Japan; teaches at “Imperial College of Engineering”, Tôkyô | 1894 honoured by Japanese “Order of the Sacred Treasures” (3rd class) | 1920 died in Tôkyô
