Czech-American architect, who is together with the British architect Josiah CONDER, considered as one of the fathers of modern architecture in Japan | 1888 born in Kladno / Czech Republic | 1906 studies at the Polytechnic Institute in Prague | 1910 completes his studies in Trieste, Italy; emigrates to the United States | 1916 works for Frank Lloyd WRIGHT | 1923 establishes office in Tôkyô after “Kantô Earthquake” on September 1 | 1928-41 employes YOSHIMURA Junzô | 1930-35 employes MAEKAWA Kunio | 1933 meets Bruno TAUT in Japan | 1934 named “Chevaliers of the Légion d’honneur” | 1941 leaves Japan because of the Second World War | 1948 reopens office in Tôkyô | 1973 returns to the United States | 1976 died in New Hope / Pennsylvania
