MVRDV

Winy MAAS, Jacob VAN RIJS and Nathalie DE VRIES

Dutch architectural practice founded in Rotterdam in 1993. MVRDV – an abbreviation of the surnames of the architects – has played a major role in the renewal of Dutch architecture and is known for their experimental design. Maas, Van Rijs and De Vries graduated in architecture from the “TU Delft” in 1990. Winy Maas also studied urban planning. Before founding MVRDV, Maas and Van Rijs worked for Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Maas, Van Rijs and De Vries participated together in “Europan 2” in Berlin, a competition of about 20 countries for young architects and urban planners. The three won with their design ‘Berlin Voids’ and decided to continue working together and founded MVRDV, which, in addition to building designs, deals with urban planning and landscape architecture.
