American architect, lay Anglican church missionary and educator who lived and worked in Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912) | 1857 born in St. Louis, Missouri, USA | 1879 graduates in architecture at “Harvard University” | 1880 goes as a missionary to Japan; becames headmaster of the “Rikkyô School” (later “Rikkyô University”) | 1883-84 builts “St. Paul’s College” in the Tsukiji Settlement; becomes its principal on its completion | 1925 died in Tôkyô
