First American missionary of the “American Board” to Japan, architect, and bible translator | 1843 born in Massachusetts, USA | 1862 enlistes in the Dartmouth Cavalry on the Union side during “Civil War” | 1863 makes a profession of faith, becomes Christian | 1869 sent to Japan by the “American Board of Commissioners For Foreign Missions” | 1870-74 lives and helds his first service in Kôbe; “Union Church” probably his design | 1874 moves to Yokohama, helps to translate the “New Testament” into the Japanese language | 1879 receives the degree of doctor of vivinity from “Rutgers College” | 1881 moves to Kyôto, instructor in the theological department of “Doshisha English School” | 1913 died
