Internationally active Swiss architect and former monument conservator | 1943 born in Basel, Switzerland | trained as a cabinet maker | studies interior architecture and design at the “FHNW Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst” (Academy of Art and Design), Basel | 1966-68 studies indistrial design at “Pratt Institute”, New York | 1979 founds his own architectural practice | 1988 teaches at the “Southern California Institute of Architecture”, Los Angeles | 1989 teaches at the “Technical University of Munich” | 1994 elected to the “Academy of Arts”, Berlin | 1996~ professor at the “Accademia di Architettura” of the “Università della Svizzera Ittaliana” | 2008 Praemium Imperiale award from the Japanese imperial house | 2009 honoured by Pritzker Architecture Prize | 2013 receives “Royal Gold Medal”
