Tôgan-ji, in the Motoyama area of Nagoya City, dates from the 16th century and was originally built by ODA Nobuyuki – the younger brother of ODA Nobunaga (1534-82), who is regarded as the first of the three “Great Unifier” of Japan – in memory of their father ODA Nobuhide. It was moved to its current location in 1714. The temple grounds have a turtle pond, a grove of giant bamboo and a Chinese-style gate. A 10-meter tall Buddha statue known as “The Great Buddha of Nagoya” was erected in 1987.
