Chion-in 知恩院

Buddhist temple / japanischer Tempel

Higashiyama-ku / Kyôto City

The main temple of the Buddhist Jôdô-shû school, built in the 13th century to the north of Yasaka-jinja, is one of the largest temples in Japan. The current buildings date from the 17th century, as several fires had previously destroyed a large part of the complex. The two-storey, 24 metre high main gate dating from 1619 is a national treasure. Chion-in also has the largest temple bell in the country.
