The complex was built in the 6th century – under the name Asuka-dera in Asuka. When the capital was moved to Heijô-kyô (Nara), the temple was also relocated – as Gangô-ji it was soon one of the seven large temples of the new capital. A conflagration destroys most of the buildings in 1451 – only the Zenshitsu-dô hall has survived to this day. In 1998, UNESCO declared the temple a World Heritage Site.
