Zôjô-ji is a temple of the Shingon school (later Jôdo-shû) founded by Kobo Daishi’s (774-835) disciple in the 9th century. During the Edo period (1603-1868), family temple of the Tokukawa clan. At that time, the grounds extended to the large “Daimon gate”. The complex was largely destroyed during the Second World War, but the original Sangedatsu-mon gate (1622) has been preserved. Six of the 15 Tokugawa shoguns are buried in the Zôjô-ji.
