The Ninna-ji temple complex in the north-west of Kyôto City, which has been generously laid out since the end of the 9th century, belongs to the Buddhist school of Shingon-shû founded by Kôbô Daishi and is now one of the most important centres of esoteric Buddhism in Japan. The current buildings were constructed between the 17th and 19th centuries. The temple has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.
