Kamakura City

Engaku-ji – named after the sutra Engaku-kyô – was founded in the capital Kamakura in 1282 and dedicated to the victims of the Mongol invasions in the previous years (1274 and 1281). In the 19th century, the complex was one of the most influential Zen temples in eastern Japan. The Kantô earthquake (1923) destroyed large parts of Engaku-ji – only the beautiful Shariden Reliquen Hall remains.
