In the ancient village of Ôhara, northeast of Kyôto City, near the historic Jakkô-in, is the Heian period (794-1185) temple of Sanzen-in, which evolved from the Ojô-gokuraku-in temple of the Tendai school founded in 985. In today’s main hall, which stands in the middle of a moss garden and among maple trees and cedars, is the golden sculpture of Amida Buddha from 1148. To the south of the hall, a small garden in the palace style (shinden-zukuri) of the Heian period has been laid out.
