Kamakura City

Jôchi-ji is a Zen monastery that was built at the end of the 13th century in the north of Kamakura east of Tokei-ji and south-west of Kenchô-ji temple. It belongs to the Engakuji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen buddhism. There is a cave where a statue of Hotei, one of the Seven Gods shichifukujin, is kept. The Kantô earthquake of 1923 left behind only the entrance gate and the architecturally unusual Shôrô-mon gate, a two-storey combination of gate tower and bell tower – with a bell dating from the 14th century.
