Taiyû-in 大猷院
Mausoleum of TOKUGAWA Iemitsu
Nikkô City
Taiyû-in is the mausoleum of the 3rd Shôgun TOKUGAWA Iemitsu (1604-1651) at Rinno-ji Temple on Mt. Nikko in the city of Nikkō in the Nikkô National Park. Although smaller in scale and less glamorous than Tôshô-gû, it is built in gold and black to create a dignified and calm atmosphere. There are 22 registered national treasures and important cultural properties built on the grounds. Other highlights include the magnificent Nitenmon Gate and the Kôkamon Gate. The buildings of the Taiyû-in face Tôshô-gû and stand guard over it, showing TOKUGAWA Iemitsu’s respect for his grandfather Ieyasu.
