The site of Zentsû-ji, birthplace and place of worship of Kôbô Daishi (774-835) – influental monk, scholar, poet, artist and founder of the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhismus – is named after the temple of the same name founded in the 9th century. In the main hall of the temple complex there is a statue of Yakushi-nyorai as well as 108 rakan figures carved from wood – remnants of a group of 500 figures that fell victim to a fire in 1558. Zentsû-ji is the 75th temple of a total of 88 temples on the 1,200 km Shikoku Buddhist pilgrimage route = shikoku-hachijû-hakkasho (“88 places of Shikoku”).
