Founded at the beginning of the 17th century with the support of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu as a rival to the nearby Nishi-hongan-ji, the main temple of the Buddhist religious community Ôtani-ha (the movement has approximately 5.5 million members), a branch of the Jôdo-Shinshû (school of “Pure Land Buddhism”). The two temple halls, Hondô “main hall” and Daishi-dô “founder hall”, were built over 100 years ago and are among the largest wooden structures in the world.
