Seiganto-ji is the first of the 33 temples of the “Saigoku Pilgrimage Route”, first conducted in 1161, leading to thirty-three Buddhist temples throughout the Kansai region. It is located in the Yoshino-Kumano National Park, in the immediate vicinity of the sacred Nachi Falls and the Shintô shrine Kumano Nachi-Taisha. The temple, considered as a jingû-ji (places of worship composed of a Buddhist temple and a Shintō shrine) is part of the Kumano Sanzan shrine complex.
