Ôsu-kannon – Japanese Buddhist Temple | Hartmut Pohling
The temple was built in Hashima, a town in the neighbouring prefecture of Gifu in 1324 by order of emperor Go-Daigo in memory of the scholar SUGAWARA Michizane (845-903) – famous scholar, poet and statesman of the Heian period (784 / 794–1185), who fell victim to a plot and was banished into exile in Dazaifu. When a tidal wave almost completely destroyed the temple, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu had it rebuilt at its present location in 1612. The current site dates from the 20th century and is a popular temple in the Ôsû district of Nagoya.
