Zen temple of the Kennin-ji branch of the Rinzai school, located in Higashiyama, Kyôto. It was founded during the Muromachi period (1336-1573) by a widow: TOYOTOMI Nene (1540s-1624) had Kōdai-ji built as a memorial to her deceased husband, the powerful general and unifier of the realm, TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi (1537-98). In the memorial hall, the Kaizan-dō, carved statues of the couple are enshrined.
