Kôfuku-ji, one of the “7 great temples” of Nara, was founded in the middle of the 7th century by members of the Fujiwara clan and moved to its present location as a family temple in 711. In the 10th century, the temple gained massive influence and brought various temples under its control. The five-storey pagoda, at 50 m, is one of the tallest in the country.
