Adashino-Nembutsu-ji 化野念仏寺

Buddhist temple / japanischer Tempel

Sagano / Ukyô-ku / Kyôto City

Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is said to have been founded by Kôbô Daishi (774-835), founder of the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhism, in the early 9th century. The temple is located in the northwest of the city of Kyôto, in an area where the bones of the deceased have been abandoned in nature since the Heian period (794–1185). Today, more than 8,000 Buddha figures on the temple grounds are said to commemorate the souls of these dead. Thousands of candles are lit in front of the stone monuments during a ceremony once a year.
