Asakusa Kannon, also known as Sensō-ji, is located in the historic Asakusa district and is the oldest Buddhist temple within the Tôkyô metropolitan area. According to legend, the origins of the temple date back to the 7th century, when a statue of kannon was discovered entangled in a fishermen’s net in the Sumida River, prompting the establishment of a sacred site at that location. From the Kaminarimon “Gate of the Thunder Deity”, distinguished by its massive lantern, the historic shopping street Nakamise leads through the Hōzōmon, the temple’s treasure hall, and onward to the main hall.
