Daigaku-ji, a temple of the Shingon school, is located in Sagano, a district in the west of the city of Kyôto. The temple served as a palace for Emperor Saga (786-842) and is therefore also known as Saga-Gosho. In 876, the villa was converted into a temple, where several abdicated emperors took up residence as monks over the course of time. The temple burnt down in 1336 and was rebuilt during the reign of the Ashikaga. Daikaku-ji has always been a popular place for night-time boat trips on the neighbouring Ôsawa pond.
