Founded in 1236, Tôfuku-ji temple is located in Higashiyama-ku, the eastern district of Kyôto. Its 22 m high main gate (sanmon) is considered the oldest of its kind in Japan. The Zen temple has had several important protectors throughout its history, such as ASHIKAGA Yoshimochi, TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi or TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. The temple’s four modern dry gardens, the Hôjô gardens (hôjô-teien), are designed in the 1930s by the landscape architect SHIGEMORI Mirei (1896-1975).
