Commissioned by Emperor Shômu in the 8th century, Hida-Kokubun-ji is the oldest temple in the city of Takayama. The current buildings date from the 16th century, the three-storey pagoda from 1821 and the gingko tree is said to be well over 1000 years old. The temple’s treasures include a sword from the Heike clan and Buddhist figures from the Heian period (794–1185/1192).
