Zuigan-ji is the best-known Zen temple of the Rinzai Buddhist school in the northern region of Tôhoku. The origins of the temple can be traced back to the 9th century. Commissioned by DATE Masamune (1567-1636), a powerful daimyō in the Tōhoku region, in the typical style of the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1600), it was completed in 1609. The temple has been one of Japan’s national treasures since 1953.
