Nagoya, an industrial and port city with 2.3 million inhabitants today, built in the 16th century around the fortress Nagoya-jô, is located in the centre of the main island of Honshû – conveniently between the large conurbations of Kantô around Tôkyô in the east and Kansai around Ôsaka in the west. Nagoya is Japan’s third largest economic centre – after Tôkyô and Ôsaka – and is also known as the headquarters of the Toyota company. The city is divided into 16 urban districts ku, has a metro system consisting of 6 lines, wide roads, a motorway network spanning the city and since the EXPO 2005, the new “Centrair Airport” and the magnetic levitation train in the neighbouring town of Nagakute.
