Ōhara 大原

The cultural highlights of Ôhara, a village located north-east of Kyôto City, are the historic Jakkô-in nunnery and the Heian period (794-1185) temples Sanzen-in (founded 985) and Shôrin-in. Ôhara is also known for the Ôhara-me, the peasant women in indigo-coloured work clothes with white headgear and legwear who, atypically for Japan, carried their loads on their heads – mostly firewood or flowers, which they sold in the city.
