The place of pilgrimage Kotohira, a small town in Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku with a population of about 12,000, is particularly known for the nearby shrine Kotohira-gû, also known as Konpira-san, which is an important pilgrimage destination for sailors and travellers. Halfway up Mount Zôzu-zan, the “elephant’s head”, the main hall (hondô) of the shrine is located after 785 steps.
