Naha City 那覇市

Naha on Okinawa Island has an estimated population of 317,000 and is the largest city and the administrative seat in Okinawa Prefecture. The climate is subtropical and monsoonal. Naha has the “Yui Rail” monorail and ferry connections to the surrounding islands and to cities on the main Japanese islands. Air traffic is mainly handled by Naha Airport. In 1853, the US naval officer Matthew PERRY landed in Naha during his successful campaign to open Japan to foreign trade. In the three-month Battle of Okinawa, the last battle of the Pacific War in 1945, Naha and all other towns in the south of the island were almost completely destroyed.
