Kawasaki City

川崎市

Kawasaki, a city of one and a half million, has grown together with Tôkyô and is separated by the Tamagawa River. It is one of the most industrialised (refineries, electronics, food and vehicle manufacturing) and densely populated cities in the world. Kawasaki developed in the Edo period (1603-1868) around a post station on the old Tôkaidô overland route. With the Kawasaki Daishi, the city owns a Buddhist temple from the Heian period (794-1185).
