Matsuyama with a population of nearly 500,000 – once a castle town built around 1600 – is the largest city on the island of Shikoku. In the centre, on Shirayama Hill, is the 400 years old Matsuyama-jô fortress with its three-storey main tower. Dôgo-onsen, in the north of Matsuyama, is one of the oldest spas in the country.
