Japanese architect known for fusing modernism with Japanese architectural traditions | 1928 born in Tôkyô | 1952 graduates from the “University of Tôkyô”, student of TANGE Kenzô | 1953 master at “Cranbrook Academy of Art”, Michigan | 1954-55 works for SKIDMORE, OWINGS and MERRILL, NYC | 1956 master of architecture at “Harvard Graduate School of Design”; post assistant professor at “Washington University”, St. Louis  | 1960 returns to Japan to help establish the “Metabolism Group” | 1965 founds own office “Maki & Associates” | 1979-89 professor at University of Tôkyô | 1993 honoured by Pritzker Architecture Prize | 1999 receives Praemium Imperiale from Japan’s imperial family | 2013 designs “Tower 4” at the former World Trade Center site | 2024 died in Tôkyô
