Japanese architect who played a key role in the establishment of the “Architectural Society of Japan”, the predecessor of today´s “Architectural Institute of Japan” | 1856 born in Musashi Province (today Saitama Prefecture), but raised in Edo (Tôkyô), as the son of a shogunal retainer | 1882 graduates from at the department of architecture of the “Ministry of Public Works University”, where he studied under Josiah CONDOR; serves as an official attached to the “Imperial Palace Construction Office” – was in charge of the exterior design of Nijūbashi | 1886 studies in Germany about Neo-Renaissance architecture under ENDE & BÖCKMANN | 1905 establishes the “Kawai Architectural Office” in Kôbe and soon was regarded as a leading figure in the Kansai architectural community | 1934 died in Kôbe
