山田守 (1894 – 1966)

Japanese architect and first promoter of modern architecture in Japan | 1894 born in Gifu | 1917 enters “Tôkyô Imperial University” (today “University of Tôkyô”) | 1920 forms a group of young architects: “Separatist Architecture Society” | 1924 joins the “Civil Engineering Department of the Bureau of Reconstruction”, where he designs bridges for reconstruction after the Great Kanto Earthquake | 1929-30 travels through Europe on behalf of the “Ministry of Communications”, observes the architecture of various European cities, visits LE CORBUSIER and Walter GROPIUS | 1945 retires from the Ministry of Communications | 1949 founds own architectural firm; helps to establish “Tôkai University” and becomes professor of the department of constructing engineering | 1966 died
