曾禰達蔵 (1853 – 1937)
The son of a samurai became one of Japan’s first modern architects | 1852 born in Edo (now Tôkyô) | 1879 graduates at the newly found “Imperial College of Engineering” (Kôbu Daigakkô), studies together among others with TATSUNO Kingo and KATAYAMA Tōkuma under Josiah Conder | 1890 joins MITSUBISHI JISHÔ SEKKEI, after working for a time as a naval engineer; working on their office building complex in the Marunouchi district of Tôkyô | 1906 leaves MITSUBISHI and sets up his own office; continues to work for MITSUBISHI, other companies and clients | 1920s and 30s he becomes an influential architect in Japan | 1937 died
