TATSUNO Kingo

辰野金吾 (1854 – 1919)

He was one of the first modern architects in Japan. Almost two thirds of the 140 buildings he was associated with were bank buildings | 1854 born in Karatsu / Kyûshû | 1879 graduates from architecture at the “Imperial College of Engineering”; student of Josiah Conder | 1880-81 attends courses at “University of London”; works for William Burges; travels extensively in France and Italy; teaches at Imperial College of Engineering; becomes department head at “Imperial University” (today “University of Tôkyô”) | 1886 one of the founders of “Architectural Institute of Japan” | 1890-96 designs and builds the “Bank of Japan” | 1903 sets up his own architectural office | 1914 completes “Tôkyô Station” | 1919 died on Spanish flu
