The temple was built in 1324 by order of Emperor Go-Daigo in memory of the scholar SUGAWARA Michizane (845-903) in Hashima, a town in the neighbouring prefecture of Gifu. When a tidal wave almost completely destroyed the temple, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu had it rebuilt at its present location in 1612. The current site dates from the 20th century and is a popular temple in the Ôsû district of Nagoya.
