Daigô-ji was originally built in the 9th century by the monk Rigen Daishi (832-909) on the summit of Mount Daigo in the city of Kyôto as a temple of the Buddhist Shingon school. The lower section on the slope of the mountain was not built until the middle of the 10th century. The five-storey pagoda dating from 951 is the oldest in Kyôto. The temple complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 1994.
