This temple of the Buddhist Jôdo school was probably founded at the beginning of the 8th century. The complex is famous for its 9 metre high gilded eleven-headed Kannon statue. ASHIKAGA Yoshimasa, eighth shôgun of the Muromachi period (1333-1573), had the buildings rebuilt in 1495. There are many small jizô in the upper part of the temple grounds – for the protection and benevolence of the “water children” who were never born.
