Branch temple of the world heritage-listed Rinnô-ji temple founded in 784 by Shôdô Shônin (735 AD – 817 AD), the founder of Nikkô. The main image of the eleven-faced, thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (national treasure) is said to have been carved into a standing cinnamon tree by Shôdô Shônin after he saw the image of the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva above Lake Chûzenji. The temple is also visited by many pilgrims as it is the 18th of the 33 sacred places of the “Bandō 33 Kannon Pilgrimage”.
