(1890 – 1967)

Belarusian-French painter and sculptor of Cubism | 1890 born in Vitebsk (Russian Empire, now Belarus) | 1906 studies modelling and attends art schools in Sunderland and London | 1909 moves to Paris, attends the “École des Beaux-Arts” | 1911 makes his debut at the “Salon d’Automne” | 1914-25 joins the Cubist movement and produces entirely independent works | 1921 receives French citizenship and teaches at the “Grande Chaumière” in Paris | 1923~ exhibits at the “Salon de Tuileries” and the “Salon d’Automne”; continues to develop his own style, strongly oriented towards primitivism and African sculpture | 1941 emigrates to the USA, teaches at the “Art Students League of New York” | 1945 returns to Paris | 1950 receives the “Sculpture Prize” at the “Venice Biennale” | 1967 died in Paris
