US American kinetic sculptor | 1907 born in South Bend, Indiana | 1913~ moves with his family to Europe; studies history in Oxford, travels through Europe, studies art in Paris, returns to the USA and becomes a teacher | 1942~ joins the US Army; studies art at “New York University”, “New York Institute of Fine Arts” and the “Chicago Institute of Design” | 1945 works on his first mobiles inspired by the kinetic sculptures of Alexander CALDER | 1951 his first kinetic sculpture is shown at the “Metropolitan Museum of Art” | 1979 major retrospective of his works at the “Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum”, New York City | 2001 membership at the “National Academy of Design” | 2002 died in Saint Paul, Minnesota
