French sculptor considered as one of the fathers of modern sculpture | 1840 born in Paris | 1853-57 student at the “Petite École”; tried three times in vain to be accepted at “École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris”; continues career without further official training | 1870 first public orders | 1875-1876 study trip to Italy to unravel Michelangelo’s mystery | 1877 returnes to Paris to study Gothic cathedrals | 1879-82 works for porcelain manufactory | 1894 settles in Meudon and gathers a circle of young writers and artists around him | 1900 world exposition in Paris: “Rodin Pavilion” presents 171 of his works | 1904 president of the “International Society of sculptors, painters and gravers” | 1905/1906 Rainer Maria RILKE works as RODIN’s private secretary | 1917 died in Meudon
