(1901 – 1985)

French painter, sculptor, collage and action artist – and an influential art writer. He develops the concept of an anti-intellectual art, which he called “Art brut” | 1901 born in Le Havre | 1916 evening classes in drawing at the “École des Beaux-Arts” in Le Havre | 1918 goes to Paris to study literature, language and music at the “Académie Julian” | 1920s paints representational compositions in the circle of the Paris Surrealists, but gives up art and works as a wine merchant | 1942 sets in again with naïve paintings | 1944 first solo exhibition in Paris | 1972 creates with “Coucou Bazar” a synthesis of the arts consisting of painting, sculpture, theatre, dance and music | 1985 died in Paris
