Italian painter and sculptor who founded the school of “Metaphysical Painting” regarded as a major influence on later Surrealism | 1888 born in Volos, Greece | 1906-09 studies sculpture at “Royal Academy of Fine Arts” in Munich and gets inspiration from the dream images of the grafic artist Max Klinger and by reading Schopenhauer and Nitzsche | 1911 moves to Paris and meets important artists of his time | 1915 moves to Ferrara, Italy | 1915-25 mainly paints still lifes – faceless drawing dolls and antique statue motifs | 1920 co-founds the magazine “Pittura metafisica” | 1924 moves back to Paris and co-founds the magazine “La Révolution surréaliste” | 1974 becomes foreign member of the “Académie des Beaux-Arts” | 1976 honoured by the German “Grand Cross of Merit” | 1978 died in Rome
