Tomi UNGERER
(1931 – 2019)
French graphic artist, writer and illustrator of picture books for children and adults. In his last 40 years, he put around 40,000 drawings on paper and published over 140 books. Throughout his life, he complained about his flood of ideas, saying that his head was about to explode with new ideas | 1931 born in Strasbourg, France | 1956 emigrates to New York, USA, with a few dollars in his pocket | 1971 leaves N.Y.C. with his third wife on a farm in Eastern Canada, where the former city dwellers wanted to live self-sufficiently | 1976~ lives alternately in Ireland and his home town of Strasbourg | 1993 receives the “Federal Cross of Merit” for his commitment to Franco-German friendship | 2019 died in Cork, Ireland
