German painter, sculptor and graphic artist. Becomes internationally known in the 1970s with figurative, expressive paintings. Destruction and suffering of the Second World War had a lasting impact on the artist | 1938 born in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony | 1958 moves to the western part of Berlin | 1969~ paints his motifs upside down, which helps him to achieve his breakthrough and makes his works unmistakable | 1998-2005 creates over 60 Russian pictures. He alienates several images of socialist realism that he knew from his youth in the GDR | 1999 honorary member at the “Royal Academy of Arts” | 2004 receives “Praemium Imperiale” from Japan’s imperial court | 2012 “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur”
